Vauxhall Unveils New Auto – Men In Black-Style

A pretty nice way to call attention to a new car launch.

(Thanks for the link, James.)

According to an article on the London se1 website:

A strange crater appeared in Potters Fields Park on Saturday as part of the launch of Vauxhall’s new Insignia car range.

The large object had ‘landed’ on the grass next to City Hall and was emitting smoke and a strange noise.

Men in dark glasses were guarding the crash site and refusing to explain to passers-by what was happening.

From what we can ascertain from our web search, (or at least the way we envisioned it going down) the object remained in the field all weekend, and was extracted via crane on Monday. The tubular object opened and “dropped” the car 45 feet. The women playing instruments are pretty cheesy, and youu can tell it was actually lowered via cables, but it was still a pretty novel introduction.

Guidos? In my city?

Local dude Chris Reinhard has noticed a disturbing trend in the local scene: Guidos.

Lucky for all of us, he’s taken preemptive action and emailed Mayor Hickenlooper about it. An excerpt from his letter:

Dear Mayor Hickenlooper,

I recently was made aware of a disconcerting problem in the Denver Metro Area. Especially in and around nightclubs and bars, the subset of guidos is growing. You may not be familiar with guidos: these men and women wear exceptionally ‘loud’ clothing, misuse and abuse artificial tanning facilities throughout the city, and are usually associated with poor social behavior that is infringing upon the good nature of Denver’s other, more responsible and fun-loving residents. I obviously needn’t express further why this is such a dangerous issue, but I must stress that the longer it is neglected, the more problematic it is destined to become.

For the full text, go to his blog

We can’t say we’ve noticed this problem.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Mark Ryden & Marion Peck Short Film

We’ve always been huge fans of illustrator Mark Ryden. But this new short film he put together along with Marion Peck to promote their Sweet Wishes Picture Book freaks us out a little. Music by Raymond Scott and the Secret 7, “And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon,” from THE UNEXPECTED Vocal by Dorothy Collins.

Crispin Porter + Bogusky's New Microsoft Campaign Leak?

According to LiveSide, the 13,000 employees who just attended Microsoft’s annual Global Exchange (MGX) in Atlanta were treated to some of the new ads for Vista coming out later this year. After seeing them, one attendee “got goosebumps – just, wow.”

Was it a glimpse at what CP+B has in store for the world to save the behemouth? It appears so. And to go along with it, the sleuths at ZDNet spotted the banner below on Microsoft’s homepage yesterday. Click the image to see where it leads. Uh, yeah. Stay tuned for this one, friends.

JC Penney: High School Cinema

This ad has us feeling a bit ill this morning. First, has the generation it’s targeting seen the movie The Breakfast Club, and does that matter? Second, it’s a cover of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” but does this music appeal? Third, what is the actual takeaway from the spot? We say, this thing severely misses the mark.

Your thoughts?

You Should Know About Jacqueline Buckner

You know the green-tinted menu photos of your favorite Poo Poo Platter at the Jade Dragon, the Jade Garden or whatever Jaded Chinese place you and your old lady hit? Jacqueline Buckner’s intricate and mindful food stylings had nothing to do with those photos.

With 20 years of experience and offices in both NYC and Boulder, Jackie is The Egotist’s go-to for making food look fantastic. But don’t take our word for it. Just read some of the accolades from her clients, ranging from The Rocky Mountain News’ food editor to the higher-ups at Good Times, Champps and McDonald’s. Welcome to our list of Recommended Resources, Jacqueline. Thanks for making Poo Poo actually look edible.

Another Cool Conveyor Belt

While we have to admit, this looks a little like Photoshopped spec work (the English copy, in a seemingly Asian marketplace was our first clue), we still enjoy a clever idea when we see one, and given the timely nature of the recent Sukle success, we figured we would post this one too.

We aren’t suggesting that either is a rip off of the other, but rather two exceptionally clever ways to reach the target audience, in a fun and memorable way.

This check out line conveyor medium will definitely catch on more and more we anticipate, so it will be interesting to see who does what, where, and how…and we can always remember that our hometown heros (Sukle) helped pioneer the way.

Papa John's Newest Topping: Alfalfa Bales

Nothing pleases us more than to know the first (and last) taste thousands of people will soon have of Colorado will be a huge ad for a crappy pizza chain. Praise advertising and its insidious ways.

Pizza maker Papa John’s is promoting its whole-wheat crust made from Colorado-milled grain by carving a pizza into the wheat fields near Denver International Airport runways.

Papa John’s enlisted artist Stan Herd, who has more than 20 years of experience in “crop art,” for a pizza-based design on 6 acres near DIA’s east and west runways.

Papa John’s is looking to have the work done by early August in time for flights for the Democratic National Convention later that month. It will stay up until the first snowfall.

Herd will have a team of six working on and off, totaling an estimated 600 hours to get the crop circle ready. The pizza will be in full color, with mulch, cut corn and alfalfa bales for toppings.

The Public Finally Says 'Eff You' To A UGC Ad Contest

We here are personally pleased as punch that the American Public is finally telling the marketing world that, just like fake viral videos, the consumer generated ad/design contest is not a “Build it and they will come” magic bullet marketing solution. If we could, we’d buy every one of the 25,000 people who looked into this contest and decided not to enter an Einsteins Bagel Dog.

From the What’s Next blog:

Denny’s Contest Has No Entries. Dear Denny’s: We Won’t Work for Food.

From the how not to create a viral campaign files:

Denny’s kicked off its America Votes 4Real contest on July 8th and, so far, it has no entries – despite 25,000 views of a sample video.

Our Favorite New blog

The blog of Jack Shedd, multi-talented designer and developer, has really been floating our boat lately.

We encourage all of you to check it out on a daily basis. It’s a lot of like Kottke in the sense that it contains a wide smattering of industry-related issues, political topics, and general miscellany; the key difference being that BigContrarian has got a lot more to say and says it more often.

I mean, really, how can you not appreciate this kind of insight?: Talking about your blog is the social equivalent of talking about your dog. It’s a dull conversation for everyone but you.

Lapel Pin Concepts for Obama

Steven Heller recently put out a request to rethink and redesign the political lapel pin for Obama.

Some of the results are better than others.

The designs from Oliver Munday (shown below) are certainly the most graphically attractive, but the whole thing seems a bit half-baked, really, (though we have to admit the Office Space “flair” comparison by Rick Landers is pretty spot on.)

Is Denver gonna do better with its DNC stuff?
